The State Capitol of Texas

So did you know that Austin is the capitol of Texas? Yet another thing Conni wanted to do before moving was to visit the Capitol. I must admit, it was pretty groovy. There were about a thousand kids there with their different schools. In fact when we got inside the Capitol building there was a huge group of kids standing in the center of the building singing this long song all about Texas. Texans are really into their state. Here is a picture of the statue on top of the capitol building. It was given to Texas by France which is why she looks so similar to the Statue of Liberty. Her name is Goddess of Liberty. The kids were wondering how she got her "goddess" status, who knows?

This star is on the ceiling of the building four stories above the floor. The star is 8 feet wide from point to point, and each letter in the word Texas is 14" tall. Isn't that interesting. I must say we were amazed at how ornate the building was. It was built from 1882-1888. It is really beautiful. We found the workmanship so beautiful and were amazed how long ago it was done.
Here are Conni and I posing in the House of Representatives room. Are we cute or what?
The first thing we did when we got there was go to the Capitol's visitor center. It was really interesting. We learned lots about the history of Texas. The kids had a great time. They could dress up like cowboys and sit on a saddle. Fun, fun. Look at the picture in the upper right hand corner, that is a hinge on one of the doors of the Capitol. I'm telling you, that place was fancy all the way down to the door hinges.
